A long time ago, I created a web hosting account. The host was horrible - they never responded to emails, and their servers were always down.
I emailed them several times saying that I wanted to cancel my service. They ignored the emails. Eventually the credit card I was using to pay expired, and I figured when the billing was rejected, they%26#039;d automatically cancel the service.
A few months ago, I found out the site was still online, and it is running up a tab for my %26quot;hosting%26quot;.
I asked this before, and was told to just keep a copy of the emails I sent asking to cancel. The problem is, this was soo long ago I do not have any copies of the emails available.
I also looked up an address for this %26quot;company%26quot;, but found the address to lead to a yard care business.
About two weeks ago, their site seemed to have went down for good. Trying to access the site just comes up with a page unavailable message.
Since I had no way to contact them, am I in any way liable for the unpaid hosting?

Emails are only a partial proof. Where are the located? Do you have a physical address? Do some investigating with tools like WHOIS...

please bear with me, I%26#039;m trying to add background music to a web page, I%26#039;m learning as I go, I have an html code but requires a .wav file which is all good but I%26#039;m pretty sure I need to upload this .wav to some audio hosting site but any free sites I come across is saying upload time 1-5 minutes for every 1MB and maxes out at 20MB and this audio file I need to use, in a .wav format is 35MB. is there another way to do this? You can compress the wav to an mp3 but leave the wav header intact. This is acceptable and usually works. But there is no way I would visit a site that is going to want to transfer that amount of data to my machine, even if it was an mp3. I would suggest using MIDI tunes for background music instead.

you do not need to use .wav. modern web clients will play mp3 thru one plugin or another. re-encode the .wav to 64kbit mp3. this should cut the file size by at least 90% ut probably much more (so about 3.5mb max now). you do not need a special audio hosting service.

i like this one better since the user can stop and restart the music/whatever whenever they want to.

But I have to agree. For hosting, unless there%26#039;s some specific application that you%26#039;re running that requires a Windows server, I%26#039;d go with Linux. If for no other reason than that%26#039;s what most people use so it%26#039;s easy to get support. And with PHP/MySQL, you can do all kinds of great, custom stuff.

there is an error in your code? your host doesn%26#039;t support the page type that frontpage is offering, here%26#039;s another suggestion, if you can get homepage into code editor, copy and paste all the details to notepad, when saving name it index.html and then ftp on to your site, it might work, i don%26#039;t use frontpage, but where there%26#039;s a will, there%26#039;s a way!!! You have to create the files for your site. Your home page needs to be called index.html. Do you have Dreamweaver, or do you know any html to type into Notepad? You can create your pages either way then upload them using Dreamweaver%26#039;s FTP or a third-party FTP program. The best way to link images (or other pages) in your site is by relative links as opposed to absolute links.

It sounds like you haven%26#039;t got the URLs to the other pages or images correct. Possibly you haven%26#039;t uploaded the files, or the case of the file name has changed. It is difficult to say for sure without a URL.
That said, Publisher is not a good piece of software for creating webpages. I haven%26#039;t see the output of 2007, but the output of earlier versions (and I say this with no exaggeration at all) was the very worst HTML I%26#039;ve ever seen.

When we design a page and an image is inserted in the page the image has to be in the same folder as the web page is for the browser to locate it. So does this also apply in web hosting, I mean does the image in the page I have designed also have to be uploaded to the same folder as the webpage is? I am not too sure about what you are trying to get at, but I assume you are asking about creating a website and uploading it to a webserver.
To create your website you will need to create it using either handcoded html or a wysiwyg html editor.
The home page of the website is called either index.htm (index.html) or default.htm (default.html). By default file with these name will be called when the website is accessed.
All images are referenced to their location, normally you will save them in a folder and this is named %26#039;images%26#039; eg. %26lt;img src=%26quot;images/picture.jpg%26quot; /%26gt; . Notice source attribute contain the directory and image name.
A webserver contains a certain folder that is used to contain all the files of a website that you want people to see. This folder is usually called %26#039;public-html%26#039; or %26#039;default%26#039; or %26#039;public%26#039; or %26#039;htdocs%26#039; there are a few variations depending on how the web hosting company has setup their servers.
Upload all the files for your website into the public folder with the same structure as you have them on your local computer ie everything in the same folders.
When you get a hosting account you will be given a password and username to access the account use this to get access to the folders on the webserver and use an FTP program to transfer your file (you can use Internet Explorer or even the hosting control panel may allow you to do this).

Last August I was looking for a cheap hosting solution for a one page website, and chose these cowboys.
I have never been able to upload a single page to my alloctated domain, and each time I emailed them I was informed. %26#039;Our engineers have rectified the problem.%26#039;
In the end I just told them to get lost and used another hosting service.
But now, despite my pointing out that I could never access their services they are threatening me with debt collectors unless I pay up. It%26#039;s only a small amount, so they have added another year on for not cancelling by registered letter, although I did cancel by email, the same way I signed up.
I have a whole file of emails to them asking for help to access my domain, but never had a satisfactory reply.
I cannot believe I%26#039;m the only one to have problems with them.

Anything like that could be expensive..design costs for that could run in the thousands very easily. Web designers charge a lot...especially ones who will need to write a lot of dynamic code (which is what you are looking for...)
Hosting is cheap out the gate, but will get more expensive if you host a lot of traffic. Blue host charges about 100 bucks a year for hosting how you would need it, and are very reliable.
Making a social networking site is no joke. It takes time, and most people who design it ARE doing it to get rich (usually not by selling their designs..).
All of this is not to say that you can%26#039;t get lucky and find a web designer straight out of college to throw a grand at to design you the next big thing...
But, if you just want your own site like that to %26quot;mess around with%26quot;, well, you might be out of that league.

If this is just a page for you then free is good... Other wise why go free when you can own your own domain name and have it hosted for 1 dollar a month.

The cost depends on the amount of time and skill level required to create a website. A website similar to one you mentioned can cost in thousands.

Hi, I%26#039;m not sure I am reading your question correctly, but if I am then this explanation may help you.
If I am reading correctly I assume your destination file is in a folder that is not the same folder the sourcepage you are adding the hyper link to is.
If this is the case then you need to use a special html instruction which signifies %26quot;One Directory Higher%26quot;. This instruction is typed like so:
../
i.e.: Two periods followed by a forward slash [Note: no spaces between either period, or the period and forward slash!].
Here is an example:

This link interpretted means the following:
%26quot;Go up one directory level, then go to a folder called directoryZ, then to a file called page.html%26quot;
