How do you put a web page on the web after you designed it?

i need a free website that will allow me to do that and allow me to make my own web address without the company name stuck in somewhere. can i just host the webpage myself using my computer as a server? i have Linux Ubuntu 7.10 running if so, how?

thanks so much

Freehostia is perhaps the best free hosting service. They%26#039;re one of the few who don%26#039;t put ads all over your pages. They%26#039;ll also let you use you up to 10 subdomains

(i.e. yourwebsite.freehostia.com):

http://www.freehostia.com/

If you want to host it yourself,

pick out a subdomain at FreeDNS

(there are thousands of URLs to choose from):

http://freedns.afraid.org/

Direct the URL to your IP address:

http://whatismyipaddress.com/

And host your website on port 80 with the Abyss Web Server:

If you have a router, you%26#039;ll need to give your computer a static IP, and forward port 80 to it:

As your ISP periodically changes your IP, either update your subdomain manually at FreeDNS%26#039; website, or have one of these programs update it automatically for you:

You%26#039;re own domain name isn%26#039;t going to happen unless you pay for it. The good news is that it%26#039;s REALLY inexpensive... less than $11 US if you go with GoDaddy.

Once you%26#039;ve got the domain name, get your free hosting account here (no advertisements) and then point your domain name to the name servers they give you...

As to running your own server... well, Ubuntu is better than Windows in that respect... just add Apache and perhaps PHP and MySQL (if you%26#039;re going to be doing dynamic sites).

Here%26#039;s the problem with running your own server... (1) it%26#039;s probably against the terms in your agreement with your ISP, and can get your account suspended, (2) setting up your own domain servers is a highly technical endeavor... you need to know networking and your OS inside and out, and (3) your compute will have to be on 24/7 and you%26#039;ll need an ironclad disaster recovery plan with frequent and regular backups, and preferably a RAID system... and if your computer ever goes down or your power goes out (you have a backup battery, right) then your entire web site is out of business until it%26#039;s up and running again.
