I have my own web site and server, but my paid web space restricts the size of uploaded files to 5000KB - and the PDF I want to link to is 8000KB. Advertising on the web is exploding. As millions of potential consumers from around the world visit these good sites it is a gold mine for advertisers. Advertising in a local paper only reaches those readers in that particular area. Advertisements in popular magazines get more people seeing them in a larger area, but it is still a limited form of advertising compared to television ads. Advertisers see the web as a huge market which consists of not just their own country but all the countried around the world.
So, the internet has become the last frontier of advertising. Billions of people log onto computers every single day. Even during the work day individuals are logging onto the net and seeing these well placed ads. The more exposure an ad can get the more likely somebody will decide to give that product or sevice a try. People are even selling sugery over the net, like cosmetic surgerys. There are pages filled with before and after shots of women and men who have under gone tummy tucks, breast lifts and augmentation, face lifts, liposuction, etc.
When an individual or a group puts together a website which attracts a lot of viewers, advertisers want to place their ads on those sites. They pay a premium upfront in some cases when the site is a well known viewed one. A %26quot;hit%26quot; is when one person logs onto a particular website. Each time somebody views the website it is considered a %26quot;hit%26quot; regardless of how long or short a time the person is on that particular page.

That comes out to about $400.000.00 a DAY to the owners of that site. That is just from ONE advertiser!! Now, this is a large estimate. Lets say only 500,000 hit the site daily and only a a nickle is paid for each hit. That comes out to $25,000.00 a day. A month would garner that site $750,000.00 monthly. From one advertiser. Now, depending on the size of the ad, if there is a link to the advertisers own site, and how many pages it is on will determine how much the website owners can charge for an advertiser placing this ad on their site.
So, you can see that smart, visionary and imaginitive individuals can and do make a darn good living off selling advertisment spots to companies who wish to advertise their products and services. This site of men taking off their clothing, which is basically an online strip joint has blasted onto the radar of the world in a blink of an eye. This is the most reacent creation which is garnering a huge revenue of income to the creaters. The material is updated as needed with new items added contenually. I applaud these folks for creativity.

Putting www when it%26#039;s not necessary usually won%26#039;t hurt anything. Not having it when it%26#039;s needed will prevent the page from loading. I%26#039;d advise using www as a standard practice.

I suggest Freewebs, but if this is a professional website, I don%26#039;t think your clients will remmber the long address. I higly reccomend T35.com, if you have experience with web design, but it contains a pop-up ad on the index. You can%26#039;t get one for free that works with Frontpage, because you would need an FTP sever which is really expensive. If you learn HTML, that would be helpful, or you could manually save the files in Frontpage, an upload it to whatever server you plan on using, but is will take some time and effort :D

First things first I would avoid Dreamhost and Hostmonster (or any such company for that matter) since they are serious oversellers. Another disadvantage is that such huge companies don%26#039;t care if a customer isn%26#039;t satisfied, they have enough customers and you%26#039;re just a small fish in the sea.
Also, please be aware that websites such as hostingplanscomparison.com and getawebpage.net are often manipulated: the %26#039;best%26#039; hosting companies on such websites are listed like that because they simply pay more than other companies for the advertising on that website.
Don%26#039;t listen to Sahil either. There%26#039;s no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. Any provider offering this is are scammers. Hosting providers have to pay for bandwidth, obviously they aren%26#039;t going to sell more than they can afford. Once you start consuming too much they%26#039;ll suspend your account without any warnings. Been there, done that. GoDaddy does the same.
I%26#039;ve had a lot of trouble finding a decent hosting provider myself. I%26#039;ve been with about a dozen so far, but I finally found a very decent one. I am currious to know why your incoming traffic is 53GB and outgoing is only 4.7GB on a static site. The ratio is correct but the ammount of traffic is interesting to me... I%26#039;m currious to see your site and what it entails.
-Here%26#039;s the breakdown. Your outgoing and incoming bandwith doesn%26#039;t really matter if you are running a static website with those kinds of numbers. That seems like something your hosting provider put together for a fancy feature.
-You only need dedicated hosting if you are a larger website with lots of server-side apps or scripts that need to run, OR if you just need lots of dedicated space.
-I have a client who has dreamhost and they are on the shared hosting. I like it because their panel is easy for me to use and if you are worried about it, your bandwidth allotment can grow over time depending upon the plan you choose. It%26#039;s plenty for my client and she has a pretty dynamic site with larger files. I do like dreamhost and they are running a promotion right now!
I personally have Go Daddy. I like it and it%26#039;s very inexpensive for the shared hosting.
It sounds like you are overpaying for something you don%26#039;t really need.

Other Replys:For mostly static pages and osCommerce, that bandwidth is what I call high. It may mean you are getting a lot of visitors. But if you are not getting a lot of visitors, or there are not much clicks between different pages, then it is time to investigate.
Do you have a statistics software on your hosting? Like awstats or webalizer. If yes, look at what they (stats software) say about your traffic.
In short, that is quite high a traffic to ignore.
By dedicated hosting, do you mean you have a VPS or a Dedicated server? If a dedicated server, $150 seems ok (a little above average, but ok), but if you have a vps, then you are paying high.
About shared hosting, there is nothing wrong (you are just sharing the server resources with many other users), and it is definitely cheaper.
But if your traffic are real visitors, I would not recommend you a shared hosting, as it will cost you more money than $150 (for lost sales) if your website runs slow or goes down, just because the shared server is filled with many heavy websites like yours.
Primarily, your mission if to discover whether the bandwidth is caused by real visitors (it may be a small DoS attack). Your next phase of decision-making would depend on that answer.

I am not sure about password protection of a subdirectory or file, but it would be at the host level. You could simply create a subdirectory and put the pages there and then provide the fully qualified URL to each file to the people you want to have it. This is why you never use the isp%26#039;s email address they give you. If you switch you%26#039;ll have to let everyone who emails you know of your change of address. Do you even know how to program web pages? If you don%26#039;t you need to learn HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language) its really probably the simplest pregramming language, and theres about a billion scripts and tutorials for it, just search for them on google, and a bunch of links should pop up. Also download Notepad ++ which is a great program for compiling it. Also you need a good idea for a site, and a site where you sell stuff is HARD to make, and you need great links to shipping companies. Also, advertisements are probably not going to come, and it they do come then your not going to get very much money from them, i would suggest getting a realy job, sorry!!!
